Bloom Books is revolutionizing romance publishing—and we’re looking for a strategic Senior Developmental Editor to help us take our authors and their stories to the next level.

As one of the fastest-growing imprints in the industry, Bloom Books has built a market-leading, author-first approach that delivers unforgettable stories to devoted readers. If you are a passionate, hands-on editor with deep experience in shaping commercially successful fiction—and you love romance (including the spicy kind!)—this is an incredible opportunity to work closely with bestselling and breakout authors to craft books that readers can’t put down.

This position can be hybrid in Naperville, IL or NYC, or fully remote in the following states ONLY: AZ, CT, LA, MA, MD, MN, NJ, NY, NV, OR, PA, TN, TX, WA, AND WI.  Some travel is required to our Naperville headquarters and industry events.

This is an exempt, salaried position with an annual salary between $65,000 - $85,000 for the Chicagoland area.  We determine starting pay based on a thorough evaluation of job-related factors, including geographic location, market conditions, relevant experience, training, and education. This process ensures a fair and competitive salary that aligns with both the company and the candidate’s qualifications.

What You’ll Do:

  • Collaborate directly with authors to elevate their storytelling, ensuring manuscripts are compelling, emotionally resonant, and perfectly paced for their audience.

  • Develop deep, ongoing relationships with authors and agents to help them refine their craft and position their books for long-term success.

  • Stay ahead of market trends, understanding what makes romance and YA fiction thrive in an ever-evolving industry.

  • Guide authors through the revision process, offering insightful, constructive feedback on structure, character development, emotional depth, and voice.

  • Work across both adult and YA fiction, focusing on romance-driven narratives that engage and grow passionate fan bases.

  • Partner with the Editorial Director and other team members to shape the creative direction of the Bloom Books and Bloom YA lists.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with marketing, sales, and publicity to ensure books are positioned for maximum impact.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • 7+ years of editorial experience, with a strong focus on deep developmental editing in commercial fiction (romance and/or YA preferred).

  • A passion for romance fiction and an understanding of what makes stories emotionally compelling and commercially successful.

  • A keen editorial eye for structure, pacing, dialogue, and character arcs, with the ability to guide authors through revisions while respecting their creative voice.

  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills—you’ll be working closely with agents and authors to bring out the best in their work.

  • A collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset with the ability to juggle multiple projects while meeting deadlines.

  • Adaptability and innovation—Bloom Books takes a non-traditional approach to publishing, and we customize our process for each author’s needs.

Why Bloom?

  • Shape the future of romance publishing. Bloom Books is redefining the genre, giving authors the tools and support to create career-defining bestsellers.

  • Work with high-profile and up-and-coming talent. You’ll collaborate with some of the biggest names and rising stars in romance and YA fiction.

  • Be part of a dynamic, fast-paced, and creative environment. This isn’t traditional publishing—we move fast, think differently, and put authors first.

  • Advance your career. This is a rare opportunity to take on a high-impact role where your editorial skills can truly make a difference.
