THE ROLE
Imagine being a teacher in Sarasota, Florida with a classroom full of 6th graders who haven’t had a normal year of school or learning since before the COVID pandemic. It’s the reality of so many educators and students who use Khan Academy – and our team is uniquely positioned to help them when they need it most.
We have no end of fascinating challenges that can only be solved with a deep understanding of our users, diligent product & UX thinking, and a strong drive to make a positive impact. Some questions we’re working on answering right now are:
- How do we support teachers who are dealing with the impact that the pandemic had on learning?
- How do we help students with learning gaps catch up to their grade level?
- How do we center schools serving historically under-resourced communities in our product design and development?
- How do we reach more school districts so our learning experience gets used in more classrooms?

We’re looking for a Product Designer to join our Content Platform team. Their goal is designing and shipping experiences for Global Content Creators who are at the center of the Khan Academy learner experience. The heart of this role is making the internal content creation experience more usable and efficient, which directly impacts our Content and Assessments teams. This is a contract role of 40 hr/week for 6 months at $60/hr.
You will drive design solutions in collaboration with the Content, Assessments, and Math & Science teams. Ultimately, we want your help updating legacy tools and designing new AI-driven internal-facing tools that enable Khan Academy internal teammates to rapidly generate content.
Some of the things you will work on:
- Sketch, mock up and prototype improved content creation tools using Figma and Figjam.
- Design solutions for rapidly creating AI-created assessment items.
- Develop content strategy and interaction design patterns that scale language translations to support international teachers and learners.
- Iterate on existing Math and Science widgets for time-sensitive pilot experiences.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Design and deliver generative AI features and user-facing experiences for Content Creators
- Work closely with Product, Engineering, cross-functional teams and key stakeholders
- Play an active role in shipping outstanding experiences as a Design team
- Participate in Design team critiques and work with design colleagues in Research and Brand
WHAT YOU BRING
- 2-5 years of relevant experience as a product designer
- Previous experience and/or interest in designing internal content creation tools
- Strong generalist skills with strengths in information architecture, content strategy, and interaction design (please show us in your portfolio)
- Ability to juggle ambiguous and broad problems/opportunities along with smaller, well-defined projects
- Bias toward action, and can move quickly designing solutions that balance technical effort with a good experience
- Excited to become an expert in designing generative AI-driven products
- Bonus if you have experience designing educational products, content-forward experiences, and/or if you’ve worked in a K-12 classroom before
