Subject Matter Expert: Studio-Art Media and Materials
Are you ready to inspire the next generation of art educators and creators? As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you’ll design innovative, scaffolded course content that empowers graduate students to explore their creative potential—whether they're seasoned fine artists or new media enthusiasts. You’ll create dynamic coursework that meets program requirements while pushing the boundaries of studio art education.
We’re looking for someone who’s not only passionate about art education but also tuned into the latest trends and cutting-edge practices in the field. Your enthusiasm for art and education will shine through as you engage students and provide them with the tools they need to thrive.
We are seeking multiple candidates for course development in these content areas:
- Ceramics- wheel throwing
- Textiles- Fiber arts and surface design
- Book Binding and Books Arts
- Digital Illustration
- Visual Literacy/Literacy in Art Education
POSITION DETAILS
Structured as a Structured as a project-based 1099 contract position. This position will work with the Chair of Curriculum Development.
We have been a 100% remote company since the beginning! This position is eligible to remote work from the following locations: USA.

The Details
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Create scaffolded course content tailored to graduate-level program requirements.
- Develop innovative learning experiences for graduate-level students with direct applicability to K-12 teaching practice.
- Develop fresh and engaging assessments to evaluate learner progress.
- Craft dynamic discussion board prompts that align with course objectives, and integrate relevant readings and research.
- Develop assessment rubrics aligned to graduate-level course learning objectives.
- Produce essential course documents to support instructional delivery.
- Collaborate with Learning Experience Designers to ensure the course meets the required rigor and relevance for AOEU.
- Ensure consistent and effective communication with the Learning Experience Designer throughout the project lifecycle.
- Adhere to established project timelines and deadlines, ensuring timely completion of deliverables.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
- Proficient in technology, including word processing and Google Docs.
Position Requirements

EXPERIENCE
- Experience with studio processes and procedures preferred. Specifically in the areas of bookmaking, ceramics-wheel throwing, textiles-surface design, digital illustration, and visual literacy.
- Experience in the k-12 educational environment, ideally spanning both K-8 and secondary levels.
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
- Master's Degree in Art, Education, Instructional Design, or commensurate experience as a professional artist.
- MFA or terminal degree preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to view computer screens for significant periods of time. The Art of Education University is an online university therefore 95-98% of one’s time will be on or using technology.
- Ability to use a laptop keyboard with accuracy.
- Ability to hear at normal levels and through electronic devices such as laptops, earbuds, phones, and the like.

Compensation
Pay for this role is project-based and commensurate with experience, $2,000-$2,500 per project.

- Step 1: Complete application and writing sample
- Given that AOEU is 100% remote, the writing sample is intended to see how you might work through some of the tasks, responsibilities, and challenges that could arise in this role. You will be given a prompt and be asked to complete an assignment. Your answers will not be used for any other purposes beyond evaluating your candidacy.
- Step 2: ~30-minute phone interview with the hiring manager
