WHAT IS THE ROLE ABOUT? As our Senior Data Engineer, you will play a central role in designing, building, and maintaining the data infrastructure and datasets that support our customer-facing services as well as AI and analytics initiatives. As our expert, you will work closely with internal teams and stakeholders to ensure data availability, quality and reliability and contribute to the overall data strategy and future-state planning.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
- Design, develop, and maintain automated, scalable data pipelines and storage systems that ensure performant, cost-effective, high-quality data availability for business analytics and machine learning applications
- Partner with software engineers and data scientists to develop core data models and datasets to support business reporting needs and AI model development
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather and prioritize requirements, and develop report visualizations and dashboards to provide insights around VHL platform usage
- Provide data admin support to IT teams
- Serve as subject matter expert for datalake and report tooling, stay current with industry trends, incorporate new tools and methodologies, and leverage AI advances
- Establish tooling and training to enable a data-led culture across the organization and provide streamlined use of reporting systems and dashboards
- Establish policy and security controls to protect data within pipelines and reporting/modeling workflows
- Monitor, troubleshoot and develop solutions to mitigate data quality issues
- Create and maintain documentation for data architectures, workflows, and datasets, promoting adherence to best practices
- Provide technical mentorship to junior data engineers/analysts while fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement
- Act as DBA SME for troubleshooting and resolution of production performance and scalability issues across VHL applications
- Engage in other responsibilities and innovative projects
YOU MUST HAVE (MINIMUM REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE)
- Minimum bachelor’s degree
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering or dba management, with a proven track record of building and maintaining data pipelines and architectures
- Expert level knowledge in SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, DynamoDB)
- Advanced/Well-developed level knowledge of and/or hands-on experience working with:
- Python, Java, or Scala
- data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark, Kafka, or similar)
- cloud-based data storage and processing solutions (AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, etc.)
- good SDLC practices to ensure high-quality deliverables and enable long term system maintainability
- building and deploying mission critical applications in cloud environments (AWS or GCP)
- designing solutions for scalability and performance
- ETL processes and data modeling techniques
- data warehousing, reporting solutions (e.g. Athena, Quicksight)
- data governance best practices
- creating clear and concise documentation for data processes and architectures
- Advanced project management skills and experience working with cross-functional teams
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a focus on data quality and accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

- Ed-tech, education or similar industry experience
LOCATION: Remote/Boston-Hybrid
This position requires current residence within the United States of America. Ideal candidates will be located within close proximity to our Boston office location and be willing to work a 2-day in-office/3-day remote schedule. Relocation assistance is not available.
