Position Overview
At Teaching Strategies, we believe that significant value comes from the use of data. We are seeking a Sr. BI Engineer to join our Data team to work on data products for our customer base. As part of a team, you will be initially focusing on modernizing our reports. You will be responsible for creating or migrating SQL queries to work on a new data model and implementing a pipeline to incrementally refresh data in Databricks to generate a report-ready dataset. To be successful in this role, you will need to quickly gain knowledge of our data model, utilize your deep knowledge of SQL to convert queries to the new data model, and use your engineering prowess to implement that pipeline with support by our data engineering team.
As you grow in your role, you will develop solutions that meet the data needs of the business and the engineering organization as we grow domestically and internationally. You will partner with your colleagues to detail data models and standardize data transformations that scale to meet our expanding reporting needs to allow for rapid creation of customer facing reports. With your passion for data, you will be able to demonstrate your exceptional problem-solving skills and articulate intricate technical details with clarity while leaning heavily on your ability to collaborate and be a team player. Specific Roles & Responsibilities:
- Using SQL to extract data from our Lakehouse databases and create reports and dashboards for our SaaS customer facing products
- Perform data validation, verification, and analysis tasks to ensure data integrity and derive actionable insights
- Collaborate with data experts and quality assurance partners to understand data issues and provide timely resolutions and insights
- Develop and maintain SQL queries and scripts for reporting and data analysis
- Monitor data quality and implement improvements to ensure efficient data operation and accurate reporting
- Provide technical support for data-related issues, including troubleshooting and performance tuning
- Ensure compliance with data security and privacy regulations
Qualifications:
- Strong ability to decipher, write and optimize SQL queries; proficiency in Python is a plus
- Experience resolving common SQL issues to maintain data integrity
- Demonstratable ability to learn data models quickly
- Experience deploying ETL/ELT data pipelines; DataBricks experience is preferred
- Solid grasp on data modeling, data warehousing, and ETL techniques
- Experience with very large datasets, and building aggregations and computations in SQL at scale
- Experience with Git/Bitbucket for source control
- Knowledge of AWS and GCP cloud services
- Experience with Postgres and other RDBMs
- Experience with performance testing
- Independent work style with strong problem-solving skills
- Self-starter with sharp attention to detail
- Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities
- Five (5) or more years of hands-on experience creating complex SQL in data analysis or a similar role
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, or a related field; master's degree preferred
