Summary

The Assessment Development Specialist manages high-quality examination items and exam item banks while collaborating with project managers, editors, and psychometricians to support the development and assembly of educational assessments. This role directly impacts the careers of millions of test-takers by ensuring the quality and integrity of examination processes.

Key Responsibilities: Primary duties include managing project schedules, maintaining exam item banks, preparing materials for item writing and review meetings, conducting meetings with clients, creating test forms, and performing best practice reviews of exam items. Additional responsibilities include inventory management, scoring key preparation, and providing support to subject matter experts, with up to 25% travel required.
Skills & Tools: Required skills include proficiency in MS Office and web-based programs, strong PC skills, excellent written and oral communication abilities, and expertise in assessment development practices. Must demonstrate the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and possess strong analytical, detail-oriented, and organizational skills.
Qualifications: Minimum 3 years of experience in assessment development is required, along with demonstrated experience facilitating group meetings and trainings. Strong command of English language and excellent communication skills are essential.
Location: Remote from Virginia, United States (primarily based in McLean, VA with up to 25% travel required)
Compensation: $60,000 – $85,000/year

The Role: 

The Assessment Development Specialist works with project managers, editors, psychometricians, and other staff members to manage the development of high-quality items for examinations, maintain exam item banks, and assemble examinations, as well as, assists when needed, in the development of simulation and practical examinations, scoring, and standard-setting studies. 

The Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the development and management of project schedules.
  • Maintain clear communication with clients and their representatives. 
  • Prepare materials for exam item writing/review meetings (agendas, instructions, etc.).
  • Conduct item writing/review and exam assembly meetings with clients.
  • Prepare and maintain exam classification/blueprint systems.
  • Inventory exam item banks and maintain complete records.
  • Make assignments to exam item writers/reviewers.
  • Perform best practice review of new and revised exam items according to industry standards and company specifications.
  • Prepare materials for and conduct test assembly meetings.
  • Preassemble draft examinations.
  • Create test form(s) in accordance with specifications and test assembly records.
  • Prepare scoring keys.
  • Manage graphics, tables, and other attachments.
  • Conduct best practice and statistical review of examinations.
  • Provide support to consultants/subject matter experts.
  • Up to 25% travel required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Desired Attributes: 

  • Minimum 3 years Assessment Development experience 
  • Must have experience facilitating group meetings and trainings.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Web-based programs. Strong PC skills, including knowledge of current administrative software for handling word-processing, spreadsheets, and other tasks to perform job efficiently.
  • Must possess an excellent command of the English language.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, analytical, detail-oriented and organized.
