Role Snapshot
CommonLit seeks an experienced Controller to lead its finance team and manage all accounting and financial operations for this ~$20M nonprofit education technology organization. This strategic role involves optimizing processes, enhancing financial reporting, and mentoring team members while serving as a key financial advisor to leadership.
Key Responsibilities: Own the complete month-end close process (targeting <10 business days), manage technical accounting decisions across complex revenue streams, oversee cash management strategy, and direct general ledger management with full GAAP compliance. Lead tax compliance across 30+ states, coordinate annual audits, and develop high-performing finance team members.
Skills & Tools: Advanced technical accounting expertise, financial analysis, proficiency with ERP systems (especially Sage Intacct), advanced Excel skills, and experience with budgeting processes and multi-revenue stream accounting. Strong leadership and team management capabilities with strategic thinking and data stewardship skills.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required with 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a supervisory role. Nonprofit and multi-revenue stream experience strongly preferred; CPA is desirable.
