Skills & Tools: Strong computer skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and proven experience in transportation operations management. Demonstrated supervisory competency and knowledge of safety standards and compliance requirements.
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred. 3-5 years of transportation or operations experience and 2-3 years of supervisory experience required.

Location: Augusta, Bath, and Central Lincoln County (AOS 93), Maine

Wage Range: $50,000 – $60,000/year (commensurate with experience)

Assistant Transportation Manager Responsibilities:

  • Ensures home-to-school routes are covered in a timely and efficient manner for Augusta, Bath, and AOS 93 schools.
  • Interfaces with drivers regarding concerns and performance issues.
  • Investigates client complaints and coordinates resolutions with school officials and parents.
  • Ensures achievement of on-time performance goals and reliable student transportation.
  • Monitors driver safety and makes safety contacts with drivers to identify and resolve issues.
  • Supports Location Manager with union relations and assists with review and resolution of union grievances (where applicable).
  • Ensures dispatch staff assign spare drivers and buses as needed to provide full route coverage.
  • Assists with financial and operational audits, including athletic trip invoices, budgeting, and compliance reporting.
  • Builds positive relationships with school officials, the community, and First Student employees.
  • Participates in staff training, onboarding, and ongoing development.
  • Upholds company, local, state, and federal policies, as well as safety and environmental standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Assistant Transportation Manager Experience and Skills Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience).
  • 3-5 years of experience in transportation or operations (student transportation preferred).
  • 2-3 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with vehicle mechanic processes and maintenance is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and manage time in a fast-paced setting.
  • Willingness to work extended hours as needed, including some weekends.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle to travel within the service area.
