About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Digital Content Production, the Digital Content Developer (‘DCD’) will leverage their proficiency in HTML, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop to develop engaging HTML web content, utilizing tools such as HTML editors, Adobe Creative Suite, and Smartsheet. The Digital Content Developer will also understand accessibility principles and effectively communicate and collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and project managers.
As a key member of the Content Development and Production team, you will help drive the planning, creation, and production of content for Nelson’s digital education platform. As we continue to move beyond books, you will use your technical skills and design knowledge to create attractive and engaging content.
The close-knit Digital Content Production group works collaboratively in a fast-paced environment where priorities and projects need to be juggled, assessed, and reviewed to achieve maximum efficiency. Working with the publishers, editors, the interactive team, and project managers, you will ensure that the digital and interactive products meet the company’s quality standards.
The successful candidate will possess knowledge of HTML and photo and image editing, high attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work with technical and non-technical staff. Key to success in this position is the ability to work well under pressure, manage competing priorities, and thrive in a technical and quick-changing environment.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop engaging Digital Content and multimedia using HTML and other relevant technologies.
- Utilize Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to edit visually appealing graphics, videos, and animations.
- Follow established style guides and maintain consistency in design and messaging.
- Manage the conversion of existing manuscript and previously published content into HTML, that is accessible, appealing, and engaging.
- Collaborate with SMEs and project managers to gather requirements and ensure content meets the desired objectives.
- Understand and follow guidelines for accessibility, web compatibility, and rights and permissions, as well as file preparation requirements.
- Ensure the developed content complies with accessibility guidelines and best practices, including heading levels, color contrast, alt text, and other accessibility features during content creation.
- Create simple line art to digital specifications.
- Use project management tools to track progress, manage tasks, and meet project deadlines.
- Maintain organized files and work assignments to ensure efficient workflow and easy access to digital assets.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather feedback, make improvements, and iterate content based on user needs.
- Problem solve/troubleshoot issues throughout production.
- Prepare QA of products and assets.
- Support and maintain product post-live.
- Post-secondary degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience.
- 1+ Years of experience in HTML, HTML validation rules and an understanding of Java Script.
- Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is required.
- Knowledge of UI and web design principles is required.
- Familiarity with MathML, Smartsheet and project management tools is a plus.
- Strong creative and design skills with a keen eye for aesthetic and visual details.
- Knowledge of accessibility principles, of WCAG 2.0 and experience in implementing digital content.
- Excellent organizational skills to manage files and work assignments effectively.
- Strong communication skills and collaboration with SMEs and project managers.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines.
- Proficient time management skills and ability to work independently and in a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Continual learner with a passion for staying updated with emerging trends and technologies.
- Excellent English spelling, grammar, and communication skills are required; Knowledge of French is an asset.
