Compensation: Not provided by employer. Typical compensation ranges for this position are between $70,000 - $100,000.
SUMMARY
The Senior Editor has extensive knowledge of literature and experience developing materials that satisfy ELA standards. The Senior Editor uses that knowledge and experience to help develop competitive offerings for core programs, including student and teacher editions.
The Senior Editor works with their direct supervisor to ensure that the evolving product meets the objectives of the plan, its budget, and its schedule. They also manage in-house and freelance staff on a limited basis to complete assigned projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- With limited supervision, writes and edits manuscripts, reviews and edits all page stages of product.
- Assume a leading role in development of TOCs, ensuring balance of genres and diversity of authorship.
- Develop scope and sequence plans; maintain standards trackers, create correlations, create and maintain glossaries.
- Monitor appropriateness of text material as to reading level, content accuracy and currency, freedom of bias, and teachability.
- Write and provide art specs for artists and photo-researchers. Participate in evaluation of sketches and choice of photos.
- Working with Product Management and Marketing, analyze competition and market trends, and incorporate findings into program.
- Oversee work of freelancers and outside developers.
- Ensure compliance with state standards and assessments.
- Participate, as appropriate, in market research efforts (e.g. prepare sample lessons, conduct phone interviews, attend focus groups, etc.)
- Participate in planning assigned projects; make creative suggestions that reflect an understanding of the marketplace and an awareness of customer needs.
- Ensure that product responds to customer needs.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in curriculum development or the development of instructional materials for literacy.
- Teaching experience is a plus, but not required.
- Must be knowledgeable in educational methodologies and instructional design.
- A BA or higher in Literature, with an excellent grasp of concepts and how to teach them.
- Expertise in subgenres of literature is a plus: for example, British or American literature, Gothic literature, YA titles and authors.
