The Office of OneIT provides highly reliable information technology infrastructure, tools and services to empower the University to achieve its academic, research, administrative and service goals.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Director of Research Computing manages the group responsible for supporting the high-performance computing environment, as well as research-based servers and software. This group is composed of system and storage administrators, programmers, visualization analysts, and training specialists who work directly with researchers. This role develops and maintains relationships with academic departments, other departments in OneIT, and the national research computing and data community. The Director of Research Computing has the depth of technical knowledge and proven judgment and integrity to guide their team and implement a strategy that engages academic researchers and staff, and provides high-level technological support in alignment with the mission of the organization. The Director provides leadership and oversight of the core functions of high-performance computing and research support to ensure service excellence, efficiency, and operational effectiveness.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Manage large and technical projects of varying scale, budgets, and resources to assure high quality, quantity, and efficient operation of deployed solutions. Strategic alignment and execution of information security program goals and objectives.
  • Develop 1, 3, and 5-year technical plans based on campus needs and technology trends. Perform routine strategic reviews to ensure campus technology needs are being met and technologies are in line with OneIT goals. Ensure appropriate group staffing to meet technical and strategic goals. Maintain peer and vendor relationships to ensure broad technical knowledge and experience.
  • Continuously review the research needs of the campus, making sure technologies are in line with needs. Perform routine technology reviews to ensure proper technologies are implemented. Maintain current knowledge of all implemented and emerging research technologies. Attend training, user groups, and conferences related to implemented and emerging research technologies.
  • Oversee the research team and supervise all operational research activities. Assist staff in identifying training opportunities relevant to their job descriptions and long-range personal goals. Work with staff to further technical, communication, and strategic planning skills. Routinely review departmental needs with each staff member and align those as much as possible with staff personal goals.
  • Facilitate growth opportunities, including staff cross-training, user groups, and conferences, as practical. Interact effectively with all levels of employees to achieve organizational goals and objectives.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of management, supervisory, and administrative experience with increasing responsibility, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Master's degree or higher with experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience in high-performance computing (HPC) design and deployment.
  • Demonstrated experience with server, network, and security technologies
  • Demonstrated experience as a thought leader and innovator with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
