About the Team
The AP Curriculum and Assessment Team at College Board (110+ staff) collaborates with colleagues across all aspects of the AP Program to develop, manage, and deliver AP’s 40+ courses in a wide variety of subject areas. AP® is a rigorous academic program built on the commitment, passion, and hard work of students and educators from secondary schools and higher education. AP provides willing and academically prepared high school students with the opportunity to study and learn at the college level.
The AP Reading and Scoring function lies at the heart of AP’sassessmentintegrity and instructional value. Each year, more than 18,000 college faculty and AP teachersconveneto evaluate millions of student responses, ensuring scoring quality, fairness, and consistency across subjects. The AP Curriculum & Assessment (C&A) team—through its leadership of Reader training, scoring guidelines, standard and grade setting, and publications—ensures that each exam scorerepresentsa valid, reliable measure of student achievement aligned to college-level standards.Within AP C&A, the AP Assessment Team is across functionalgroup of experts with deep knowledge in academic content, systems, projectmanagement. This team provides critical supportto AP C&A content developers in the design, delivery, and scoring of AP exams.
About the Opportunity
As theSenior Director, AP Reading Publications and Quality Assurance, youwillserve as a key leader within both the AP Assessment and AP C&A teams. You are a strategic, collaborative, and technically adept professional who excels in fast-paced environments. With exceptional organizational and communication skills, you are deeply committed to the success ofthe APReading and the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of AP free-response scoring.
You will lead the end-to-end strategy, development, and quality oversight of all AP Reading publications ensuring alignment with the strategic vision of AP Curriculum & Assessment (C&A) leadership and broader program goals.
In this role, you will drive and coordinate high-impact initiatives that support the successful execution of AP Reading for AP C&A content teams. You will collaborate closely with internal content teams and both internal and external stakeholders to plan, manage, andfacilitateall AP Reading assessment activities. This includes overseeing the preparation and deployment of scoring assets, providing on-site support at AP Reading convention centers, and ensuring seamless coordination across all phases of the scoring process.
Additionally, you willbe responsible formanaging templates, schedules, and deliverables for all AP post-administration publications, while also collecting, analyzing, and reporting key data metrics to inform process improvements. You will ensure that all systems, documentation, and stakeholder workflows areoptimizedto support a smooth, consistent, and effective AP Reading experience across all AP subjects and content teams.
In this role, you will:
Reading and Scoring Publications(60%)
- Overseethe end-to-end strategy, development, and quality assurance of AP Reading publications—including Chief Reader Reports, AP Central scoring materials, and instructional content for AP educators—to ensure alignment with AP C&A leadership vision and programmatic goals.
- Directthe annual planning and execution of AP post-administration publication templates, schedules, and deliverables, partnering with AP Publications, AP Web, Psychometrics, and external vendors to ensuretimely, accessible, and standards-compliant outputs.
- Drivethe strategic transformation of AP Reading publication delivery, evolving content into eLearning and digital formats in alignment with the AP Program’s long-term digital content strategy.
- Architectand manage scoring guideline templates for AP Reading, AP Central, and AP Classroom, ensuring all resources meet accessibility and publication standards in collaboration with key internal stakeholders.
- Leadthe coordination and execution of spring scoring guideline reviews across all subjects and exam forms, ensuring materials are fully vetted for the AP Reading and archivedin accordance withannual administration protocols.
- Partnerwith the Publications team and external vendors tooptimizetools, processes, and timelines for the annual export and integration of free-response scoring assets.
- EnsureAP assessment team compliance with IACET CEU accreditation standards by managing reporting and documentation processes for the AP Reading event.
- Championinnovation by leading pilot projects and strategic initiatives that advance AP Curriculum & Assessment goals, as assigned by the Executive Director ofReading and Scoring.
ReaderQuality Assuranceand Improvements(25%)
- Strategizeand implement enterprise-wide scheduling and performance tracking systems tomonitorthe full lifecycle of AP scoring asset development and post-administration publication workflows.
- Overseethe configuration, validation, and quality assurance of annual scoring systems and applications, leading comprehensivechecksand resolution of defects across internal and vendor platforms.
- Evaluatecross-subject free-response performance data to ensure alignment with AP test specifications and course frameworks, supporting continuous improvement in assessment validity.
- Engineeradvanced scoringSmartsheetsto function as central planning workbooks for the AP Reading, including schedule transitions and system integrations with external vendor tools and data sources.
- Leadthe management of the annual AP C&A Reading risk and escalation log, producing a comprehensive post-cycle report with strategic recommendations to inform future planning and program alignment.
- Facilitateannual retrospective data collection and analysis with assessment content teams, delivering key performance metrics and actionable improvement plans aligned to AP program priorities and leadership expectations.
- Quantifyand communicate the effectiveness of AP Reading preparation and training efforts through data-driven impact reporting, while supporting ad hoc analytics to inform strategic decision-making.
ReadingOnsiteManagement (15%)
- Leadon-site execution and operational support forAP C&AfacilitatedAP Reading events (Sessions I & II), including pre-reading, extended, and late scoring periods, ensuring seamless delivery and adherence to program goals.
- Mitigateoperational risks by serving as the primary liaison forassessmentcontent teams and AP C&A leadership, proactively communicating progress, escalating issues, and resolving challenges in real time.
- RepresentAP C&A Assessment leadership as the principal on-site contact for vendor coordination and issue resolution throughout the AP Reading experience.
About You
- 7–10 years of experience inproduct, program,editorial, and/orproject management, preferably within educational assessment or related sectors.
- Bachelor’s degree in a content area aligned with an AP subject, education, or business;Master’sor advanced degree preferred.
- Deepexpertisein the AP Program,assessmentdesign principles, and scoring practices, including free-response items, rubric and scoring guideline development, and task model frameworks.
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Strong working knowledge of publication workflows and accessibility standards related to educational assessments and web-based content (preferred).
- Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with a proven ability to lead high-stakes, cross-functional initiatives under tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholder groups.
- Proficient in designing, managing, and interpreting dashboards and performance visualizations to support strategic planning and reporting.
- Technically skilled in project management and collaboration platforms, including Jira, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Power BI, and retrospective tools(Smartsheet Certification strongly preferred)
- High levelof technical fluency, with the ability to rapidly learnnew technologiesand a strong interest inleveragingautomation and enterprise AI for operational efficiency.
- Willing and able to travel 6–8 times per year, including 3–4 consecutive weeks during May–June to support annual AP Reading events.
