What You’ll Do
Teach Plus Pennsylvania seeks a communications leader who can think strategically and execute strong day-to-day communications. In this role, you will help shape how Teach Plus Pennsylvania tells its story, builds its public presence, and communicates with educators, partners, donors, policymakers, and community members. You will create clear, engaging messaging that helps people understand our mission, priorities, and impact in order to advance our strategy and policy priorities.
This is an important role during a period of growth, including expanding programming in Philadelphia and Southwestern PA, and advancing legislative advocacy in Harrisburg. You will help ensure our communications are consistent, timely, and aligned across strategic initiatives and audiences. You’ll take complex ideas and turn them into messages and content that are easy to understand and meaningful to the people we serve and work with.
As the Director of Communications & Digital Strategy, reporting to the Executive Director, you will lead communications planning and brand positioning, manage content and storytelling across multiple platforms, and strengthen the systems and tools that support engagement and outreach. This includes overseeing digital communications, newsletters, social media, audience engagement strategies, and communications infrastructure such as CRM systems and contact segmentation. You will also work closely with PA staff, particularly program and coalition leads, as well as members of the national communications team, to develop compelling public narratives, drive media engagement, and ensure alignment across all communications.
Responsibilities include the following:
Strategic Communications and Brand Leadership
Lead strategic communications planning and execution, including designing and executing a 12-month communications strategy that elevates our brand beyond individual events.
Shape and elevate organizational brand and messaging, establishing Teach Plus PA, its teacher leaders, and its coalitions/ staff as recognized, trusted voices statewide and in key geographies
Translate complex policy and advocacy work into compelling narratives and ensure alignment across Teach Plus PA's strategic initiatives, goals, programs, campaigns, and advocacy efforts
Manage relationships with external communications firm(s), including direct supervision, ensuring high-quality, on-time delivery and consistent, high-quality media coverage.
Contribute to meaningful policy wins and stronger programmatic reach through strategic communications, aligning activities to key policy and program moments, and increasing public and policymaker engagement.
Content, Storytelling, and Audience Engagement
Own the end-to-end production of our external and internal newsletters. You won't just "load the software"—you’ll write the hook and choose the stories.
Manage Teach Plus PA’s social media channels, creating and posting content that communicates who we are, what we do, and why it matters
Drive social media and digital engagement strategy, strengthening audience engagement across digital platforms and newsletters
Create audience-centered messaging and storytelling for donors, legislators, partners, and community stakeholders
Edit and sharpen copy for grant proposals and annual appeals in collaboration with the Development Director
Support visibility and engagement around advocacy and programmatic initiatives
Analytics & Communications Operations
Develop and refine Teach Plus PA’s communications function, establishing systems, processes, and approaches that increase impact over time and strengthen coordination, clarity, and impact across platforms and issues.
Develop a system to segment contacts (donors, legislators, partners) so the right message reaches the right person at the right time.
Track and analyze performance across media, digital, and campaign efforts
Who You Are:
Experience developing communication strategies and managing multi-channel communications, including newsletters, email campaigns, social media, and digital engagement.
Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging for a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
Ability to translate complex ideas, policy issues, advocacy efforts, and programmatic work into clear, compelling stories and communications that resonate with educators, donors, policymakers, partners, and community members.
Strong media instincts and understanding of how to engage target audiences.
Experience creating digital content, including social media and visual assets.
Strong project management and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, communicate proactively, and keep work moving across teams and timelines.
Ability to work independently and strategically in a fast-paced environment, with flexibility, initiative, and a strong focus on execution.
Experience using communications systems and tools, including CRM platforms such as Salesforce, to support audience engagement, segmentation, and relationship management.
Familiarity with Pennsylvania’s education, advocacy, media, and/or political landscape, particularly in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg, is a plus.
Location, Travel, and Commitment
This is a remote position conducted virtually, primarily from a home office. Candidates must be willing to travel regularly for regional events (most often in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh), in-person team convenings, and collaborative work sessions (approximately two times per month). These gatherings are an important part of building team cohesion, advancing strategic priorities, and supporting cross-functional collaboration.
On occasion, due to convenings, events, and organizational priorities, this role will require flexibility to work evenings, nights, and weekends.
Total Rewards
The starting salary for this position is $108,000. This reflects where new hires are placed within our Director salary band. To promote fairness and consistency, Teach Plus uses a structured compensation approach and does not negotiate starting salaries. All offers are determined using job-related criteria and alignment to our established salary framework.
