Role Snapshot

The High School Explainer position at the Exploratorium offers paid work-based educational enrichment for high school students (ages 15-20) to engage museum visitors and facilitate scientific demonstrations. This flagship youth program develops communication, leadership, and scientific knowledge while providing valuable service to the museum and its guests.

Key Responsibilities: High School Explainers engage with visitors, conduct scientific demonstrations, oversee exhibit floor activities, and monitor exhibits for proper operation. They also greet and orient visitors, assist with special needs, handle lost items, and perform minimal exhibit maintenance.
Skills & Tools: Strong communication skills, ability to work effectively with the public, and genuine passion for science and learning are essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to facilitate informal conversations and engage visitors in hands-on educational experiences.
Qualifications: Must be a high school student aged 15-18 for first-time applicants (up to age 20 for returning Explainers) and able to obtain a valid work permit. Must be able to attend all mandatory training sessions and commit to working 2-3 days per week during the summer program.
Location: San Francisco, California
Compensation: $19/hr
