Role Snapshot

The Assistant Transportation Manager at First Student oversees daily transportation operations, maintains safety standards, and ensures effective driver management and customer service. This role is critical to safely transporting millions of students and passengers daily while supporting the Contractual Manager.

Key Responsibilities: Supervise daily operations and ensure timely route coverage, monitor driver performance and safety, investigate and resolve client complaints, and manage dispatch coordination. Additional duties include reviewing union grievances, auditing athletic trip invoices, and conducting injury prevention contacts with drivers.
Skills & Tools: Required skills include proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), effective prioritization and time management abilities, and familiarity with basic vehicle maintenance processes. Strong communication and conflict resolution capabilities are essential for managing driver performance and customer concerns.
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent is required, along with 3-5 years of transportation experience and 2-3 years of supervisory experience. Candidates must possess a working vehicle for service area travel and be able to work extended hours including weekends.

Assistant Transportation Manager Responsibilities:

  • Ensures home to school routes are covered in a timely and efficient manner
  • Interfaces with drivers regarding concerns and performance issues
  • Investigates client complaints and coordinates resolutions
  • Ensures achievement of on time performance goals
  • Monitors driver safety and makes Injury Prevention (IP) contacts with drivers to identify and resolve safety issues
  • Assist Contractual Manager with review and resolution of union grievances
  • Ensures dispatch staff assigns spare drivers and buses as required to provide on-time coverage of routes
  • Audits and corrects athletic trip invoices based on company guidelines

Assistant Transportation Manager Experience and Skills Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years experience in transportation
  • 2-3 years supervisory experience
  • Computer literacy skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Familiar with basic vehicle mechanic processes and maintenance
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
  • Work extended hours regularly, including weekends
  • Possess working vehicle to travel within service area as needed
