Summary

The Instructional Designer will support faculty and programs at UNC Pembroke's Office of Online Learning by designing professional development, creating instructional materials, and implementing quality assurance for online courses. This role focuses on enhancing teaching and learning through technology integration and pedagogically sound course development.

Key Responsibilities: Lead the design and delivery of faculty professional learning programs, provide consultations on online course design and assessment, develop instructional materials using authoring tools, evaluate courses for quality and accessibility, and partner across campus departments to support online initiatives.
Skills & Tools: Expertise in instructional design theories, learning management systems (Canvas), content authoring tools (Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia), course evaluation using Quality Matters and OLC rubrics, project management, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Qualifications: Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or related field required; experience designing and facilitating faculty training on online course design, technology integration, and assessment preferred; higher education experience and teaching background are strongly preferred.

Compensation: Not provided by employer. Typical compensation for this role is $52,000 – $68,000/year based on title, seniority, and location.

Min T/E Requirements

Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or related field

  • Ability to identify instructional challenges and provide recommendations and strategies, applying learning and adult theories
  • Experience designing and facilitating training for faculty in topics such as online course design, online course assessment, technology integration in courses, instructional methods for online courses, etc.
  • Experience working with learning management systems like Canvas
  • Ability to evaluate instructional technologies and make recommendations to faculty
  • Experience developing online content using Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, and other authoring tools
  • Experience assisting faculty with designing and developing online courses through consultations, training, and instructional materials
  • Experience implementing project management strategies to instructional projects
  • Experience designing and implementing online formative and summative assessments, as well as engaging learning experiences
  • Currency in instructional technologies, trends, and issues
  • Experience applying the Quality Matters and/or OLC rubrics to course design
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work collegially and collaboratively across units
  • Attention to detail in the creation of quality learning objects and materials
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility and creativity

Primary Purpose of Position

The Instructional Designer will offer faculty and program support for teaching and learning with a primary focus on online learning. Through consultations with faculty, development and leadership in professional learning programs, the creation of instructional and training materials, technology integration, research, and related duties, the Instructional Designer will support the Office of Online Learning's strategic efforts to enhance and improve teaching and learning on campus.

Job Description

  • Provide support for faculty in the area of teaching and learning, considered broadly.
  • Lead the design, development and implementation of professional learning sessions for faculty on an ongoing basis.
  • Identify instructional challenges in online courses and recommend effective solutions.
  • Evaluate online courses using quality assurance and accessibility standards.
  • Implement shared approaches to systematic educational design and development to assist faculty to develop pedagogically sound online courses, assessments, and learning materials.
  • Develop instructional materials using current authoring tools.
  • Maintain currency with industry trends in instructional technologies and make recommendations to faculty for online use.
  • Continually research, evaluate and assess the effectiveness of instructional technology implementation at UNC Pembroke and make recommendations for innovation.
  • Partner with units and departments across campus to design and develop online initiatives and programs for faculty and students.
  • Other instructional design and technology tasks as assigned.
