The Exploratorium in San Francisco is seeking an On-Call Research and Evaluation Assistant to support visitor learning and program evaluation through conducting interviews, data collection, and assisting in evaluation methods.

Compensation: $27 - $29 / Hourly
SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting with visitor learning and evaluation of museum exhibits and programs at the Exploratorium or partner sites. Responsibilities include conducting interviews with visitors, recording interviews and survey responses, soliciting written consent for audio and video taping, conducting audio and video taping, entering and coding various types of data, and actively suggesting improvements to instruments and methods being developed. The position reports to the Manager of Visitor Research and Evaluation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conduct open-ended and semi-structured interviews with visitors using questions provided by senior research staff
- Generate appropriate non-leading questions to further clarify visitors’ responses
- Solicit written consent from visitors to be audio and video recorded
- Audio and video record visitors using a multiple camera system, including troubleshooting as needed
- Store and manipulate audio and video files and documents according to established protocols
- Input visitor interview data into spreadsheets and other electronic documents, and code/score data using coding schemes developed by senior research staff
- Assist in the improvement of evaluation instruments and methods
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED certificate
- Excellent communication and listening skills
- Accurate, rigorous, and detail-oriented
- Ability to take and follow direction from senior evaluation staff
- Interest in and/or experience with evaluation or learning research
- Ability to use iPads, Microsoft Excel and Word; familiarity with Qualtrics a plus
- Ability to set up and troubleshoot audio and video data collection systems a plus
- Flexibility in terms of availability, ranging from no work up to half time (20 hours) in any given week

- This position is based in San Francisco, California with staff expected to work onsite a certain number of days per week based on department requirements
- Ability to move from place to place; use a computer and general office equipment; lift and move up to 25 pounds short distances; stretch, grasp, kneel, twist, reach, and bend
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, and the ability to work on site, in shared indoor spaces with staff and museum visitors
- Can recruit participants on the museum floor for long periods of time
