Summary

The Academic Technologist for the Humanities at Swarthmore College partners strategically with faculty, students, and staff to advance the college's academic mission through innovative technology integration and digital pedagogy. This role designs, implements, and supports technologies that enhance teaching, learning, and research across the humanities discipline.

Key Responsibilities: Consult with faculty on instructional design and technology integration to support pedagogical goals; investigate, pilot, and implement emerging tools such as generative AI and collaborative platforms. Design and deliver workshops, training sessions, and documentation while providing ongoing support for instructional systems and troubleshooting.
Skills & Tools: Expertise in instructional design, learning management systems, academic computing platforms, digital media tools, and emerging technologies; excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to create user-friendly documentation. Demonstrated project management abilities and capacity to consult with users of diverse technical backgrounds to design effective solutions.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required with 2 years of relevant experience in instructional technology or academic technology support. Advanced degree and experience in higher education environments preferred.

The opportunity:

The Academic Technologist for the Humanities is a strategic and hands-on partner in advancing the college’s academic mission through the innovative and inclusive use of technology. This role works collaboratively with faculty, students, librarians, and staff to design, implement, and support technologies that enhance teaching, learning, and research. The Academic Technologist brings expertise in emerging technologies, digital pedagogy, and user-centered design to support a diverse academic community.

Essential Responsibilities

Instructional Technology & Faculty Support

  • Partner with faculty to explore, evaluate, and implement technology that supports pedagogical and research goals.
  • Provide consultation on instructional design strategies, digital scholarship projects, and technology integration.
  • Serve as a resource for the learning management system and discipline-specific software.

Emerging Technology Exploration & Development

  • Investigate and pilot new tools and platforms in areas such as student assessment, generative AI, collaborative platforms, and data visualization.
  • Lead or participate in the implementation of academic applications and tools.
  • Collaborate with ITS colleagues and academic departments to assess and scale promising technologies.

Training, Outreach, and User Support

  • Design and deliver engaging workshops, documentation, and one-on-one or group training sessions for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Promote awareness of academic technologies and foster a culture of experimentation and digital fluency.
  • Provide support and troubleshooting for instructional systems and services.

Who you are:

  • Demonstrated ability to consult with users of diverse technical backgrounds and design effective solutions.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems, academic computing platforms and software, and digital media tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; capable of producing user-friendly documentation and effective presentations and workshops.
  • Proven success managing small- to medium-scale projects involving multiple stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and at least two years of relevant professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Understanding of universal design for learning (UDL) and accessibility standards (WCAG).

The market range for this position is $67,000-$90,000 per year, which represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range at the time of posting. The salary offered is determined based on factors including, but not limited to, experience and education of the final selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
