Location: Full-time, in person in South Jordan, Utah
The Role
Join our rapidly expanding startup in revolutionizing data and analytics for trade and technical schools. As a Senior Analytics Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in building and optimizing our data infrastructure and business intelligence capabilities. We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated individual who sets ambitious goals and consistently delivers results on tight timelines. You should be equally comfortable designing robust data pipelines and crafting insightful analytics dashboards, ensuring that our Snowflake data warehouse and Sigma BI platform empower all teams with timely, trusted data. In our fast-paced environment, excellent communication and a self-driven attitude are crucial. You’ll be joining a talented, mission-driven team that values collaboration and bold innovation. If you are passionate about our mission to create the “operating system” for trade schools and eager to have a massive impact through data, we want to hear from you!
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain robust data pipelines: Design, develop, and manage ETL/ELT processes to bring data from various sources (e.g. MySQL databases and third-party SaaS applications via APIs) into our Snowflake data warehouse. Ensure these pipelines are reliable, scalable, and efficient in supporting our mission and product goals.
- Innovate and scale our analytics platform: Work on new data projects that broaden Lumion’s impact – from integrating additional data sources to supporting new product features with data – while ensuring our data platform scales securely and efficiently as we grow.
- Ensure data quality, performance, and reliability: Continuously monitor and optimize our data warehouse and queries for speed and efficiency. Implement data validation checks and troubleshoot any data inconsistencies or third-party integration issues, guaranteeing that decision-makers have access to accurate and timely data.
- Deliver actionable insights via BI: Build and refine data models, reports, and visualizations in Sigma (our business intelligence tool) based on business requirements. Translate complex data into intuitive dashboards and reports that help track key performance indicators and drive data-informed decisions across the company.
- Collaborate and iterate with teams: Work closely with cross-functional team members (product, engineering, operations, customer success) to gather data requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions. Provide guidance on best data practices, and help colleagues access and understand data. You’ll also have the freedom to propose improvements and experiment with new data technologies to advance our platform.
Required Skills
- SQL & Data Warehousing (Snowflake): Mastery of SQL and experience with modern cloud data warehouses (Snowflake preferred). Ability to design efficient database schemas, write complex queries, and optimize performance for large datasets. Familiarity with data modeling and transformation tools (e.g. dbt) is a strong plus.
- Data integration & pipeline management: Hands-on experience building ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest data from multiple sources. Comfort with data ingestion tools or frameworks (e.g. Fivetran, Airbyte, or custom scripts) and workflow orchestrators (e.g. Airflow or Prefect) to schedule and manage pipelines.
- Programming proficiency: Strong proficiency in a scripting or programming language for data (Python preferred) to handle custom data processing, automation, and API integrations as needed.
- Business intelligence tools: Experience creating reports and dashboards in a modern BI or data visualization tool. Familiarity with Sigma is a huge plus, but experience with similar platforms (Looker, Tableau, etc.) is acceptable. Ability to translate business questions into meaningful visuals and insights is essential.
- Version control & best practices: Experience using Git or other version control systems in a data or software environment. You apply software engineering best practices (code review, modular design, documentation) to analytics code (SQL, Python) to ensure maintainability and reproducibility of data work.
- Testing & data quality: Experience implementing data quality checks and tests (for example, using frameworks like Great Expectations or dbt tests). Commitment to ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and security across all pipelines and data sets.
- Experience: At least 3+ years of professional experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a similar role. Proven track record of building and maintaining data infrastructure and delivering business intelligence solutions. Experience in a SaaS or startup environment is ideal. Domain knowledge in payments, fintech, or education technology is a plus.
Who We're Looking For
- Mission-driven: You are passionate about our mission to transform trade education and are motivated by the opportunity to make a positive impact with data.
- Organized & autonomous: You can manage your time well, prioritize effectively, and thrive in a self-directed, remote environment.
- Resilient & hardworking: You have a strong work ethic and the determination to overcome challenges, learning and adapting as the product, data, and company evolve.
- Proven achiever: A track record of setting ambitious goals and delivering results. You take ownership of outcomes and consistently push beyond your comfort zone to meet objectives.
- Growth mindset: Enthusiastic about business growth and eager to contribute to it. You embrace feedback, seek continuous improvement, and are excited by the chance to wear multiple hats in a growing startup.
- Team player: Collaborative and quick-thinking, you enjoy working with others to solve problems. You communicate clearly and can explain complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders when needed.
Work Environment
Expect a culture of intense focus, innovation, and impactful work. We operate in a fast-paced startup environment where everyone is driven to build something extraordinary. While we outline projects and goals, we also value initiative: you’ll have the freedom to propose improvements and experiment with new technologies to advance our platform. We also believe in balancing hard work with a casual, flexible atmosphere – results matter more than formalities.
