Skills & Tools: Strong executive leadership and strategic planning abilities, deep expertise in enterprise IT operations and infrastructure management, knowledge of academic technology environments and higher education IT governance, and proficiency in data management, cloud services, and artificial intelligence applications.
Qualifications: Typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field with 10+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, including 5+ years in a CIO or equivalent senior IT executive role, preferably in higher education or large complex organizations.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Business Affairs and Chief Operating Officer, the CIO leads McCombs Technology Solutions (MTS), sets the school’s technology strategy, priorities, and investments, and advises the Dean and senior leaders on technology opportunities, risk, modernization, data, and artificial intelligence. The CIO provides executive leadership for technology operations, application development and data services, classroom and audiovisual technology, technology governance and project portfolio management, information security coordination, and technology contracting. The CIO represents McCombs within UT Austin’s federated technology environment and works closely with Enterprise Technology, the Information Security Office, the Office of Academic Technology, and the McCombs Office of Instructional Innovation. Responsibilities Technology Strategy, Governance, and Executive Advisory. Establish and execute McCombs’ technology strategy in alignment with school and university goals. Advise the Dean, COO, and senior leaders on technology investments, risks, opportunities, and trends. Lead the McCombs Technology Governance Process and oversee the technology project portfolio, prioritizing initiatives by institutional value, cost, risk, and sustainability. Represent McCombs in university technology planning and governance. Technology Operations and Academic Technology Support. Provide executive oversight for technology operations, end-user support, device lifecycle management, school-managed infrastructure, and classroom and audiovisual technology. Support faculty technical needs for teaching and research, including specialized software, cloud environments, datasets, and AI platforms. Partner with the Office of Instructional Innovation, which leads pedagogy and instructional design, while MTS provides the supporting technical platforms and support. Applications, Data, Modernization, AI, and Innovation. Oversee application development, databases, reporting, analytics, and integrations. Set priorities for modernizing legacy systems, reducing technical debt, and addressing single points of failure. Partner with data owners to improve data governance, quality, and access. Lead McCombs’ adoption of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, with practices that address security, privacy, compliance, cost, and long-term support. Information Security, Risk, and Resilience. Partner with the UT Austin Information Security Office to protect McCombs systems and data. Oversee vulnerability remediation, risk assessment, compliance, incident coordination, and security awareness. Communicate material technology risks and recommended actions to senior leadership, and strengthen business continuity for critical systems. Organizational, Financial, and Vendor Leadership. Lead MTS, including Applications and Data, Technology Operations, Audio/Visual Technology, and Technology Planning and Strategy. Set performance expectations and service standards

  • recruit, develop, and retain staff and build depth through cross-training and succession planning. Oversee technology budgets, licensing, contracts, procurement, and vendor relationships in partnership with McCombs Financial Affairs, UT Procurement, and Legal Affairs. Other duties as assigned in support of the mission and priorities of the McCombs School of Business. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of progressively responsible information technology leadership experience, including significant responsibility for technology strategy, staff, budgets, vendors, and major technology initiatives. Demonstrated experience leading a broad technology organization or portfolio spanning several areas such as application development, data and analytics, infrastructure, end-user services, cybersecurity, cloud services, or technology planning. Experience developing and executing technology strategy and leading significant modernization, digital transformation, systems implementation, or organizational change initiatives. Demonstrated experience managing technology professionals and leaders, including staff development, performance management, and organizational planning. Experience with technology budgeting, vendor management, contracting, procurement, and major technology investments. Knowledge of cybersecurity, technology risk management, business continuity, data management, and IT governance. Demonstrated ability to advise senior executives, communicate complex technology issues to nontechnical audiences, and make sound recommendations involving cost, risk, and priorities. Demonstrated success working with varied stakeholders and leading through influence in a complex organization. Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate Preferred Qualifications Experience serving as a CIO, CTO, senior technology executive, or in a comparable enterprise technology leadership role. Experience leading technology in higher education, government, another public institution, or a similarly complex, mission-driven organization, particularly within Texas. Experience working within a federated or decentralized technology environment. Experience with application development, system integration, data and analytics, enterprise architecture, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, and project portfolio management. Demonstrated experience modernizing legacy applications or reducing significant technical debt. Experience establishing or leading technology governance and enterprise project prioritization processes. Experience developing organizational approaches to artificial intelligence or other emerging technologies. Experience supporting technology requirements for academic instruction or research. Experience with University of Texas policies, procedures, and administrative systems. Salary Range OPEN Working Conditions Works in standard office conditions.
