Summary

Teach American Sign Language to elementary school students across New York City schools and communities through Togetherhood's enrichment marketplace. Create engaging, age-appropriate ASL curricula and memorable learning experiences for children in 6-18 week term-based positions.

Key Responsibilities: Design outcome-based ASL lesson plans, specify required materials, and consistently deliver engaging classes while building positive relationships with students. Help children develop passion for ASL and understand its cultural and personal significance.
Skills & Tools: Fluent in American Sign Language, experienced classroom instructor with strong interpersonal and community-building abilities. Passionate about education, flexible, cooperative, and capable of creating age-appropriate curricula independently.
Qualifications: Minimum three years teaching experience with school-age children (or compelling cover letter explaining passion for education). Must be fluent in ASL, Brooklyn-based, able to provide three professional references, and demonstrate consistent reliability and strong work ethic.
Location: New York, New York (on-site at various schools and community buildings across NYC)
Compensation: Not provided by employer. Typical compensation for this role is $35,000 – $55,000/year based on title, seniority, and location.

What You'll Do

You will be matched with opportunities to teach art in Spanish to elementary school students at schools, buildings and communities across New York City. These teaching opportunities will be for terms that could last anywhere from 6 weeks to 18 weeks. In this role, you'll have the following responsibilities:

  • Conceive of and create an age-appropriate curriculum for your class
  • Design outcome-based lesson plans
  • Specify the materials you'll need to run the course successfully
  • Consistently arrive at your class on time (or early!)
  • Create and memorable experience for the children in your class to help them grow and develop a passion for ASL
  • Help children understand why art is so wonderful and how it's helped shape you as a person
