Key Responsibilities: Provide primary laboratory support and expert practical guidance during surgical training courses, demonstrate surgical instruments and implants, troubleshoot equipment, and manage laboratory operations including inventory control, specimen care, and compliance documentation. Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Medical Education, and R&D teams to facilitate successful training programs and support internal employee development.
Skills & Tools: Strong customer-facing and presentation skills with expertise in surgical procedures and medical devices; proficiency in inventory management, document systems (SAP preferred), and health/safety practices related to biological materials and laboratory environments.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent relevant experience, with a minimum of 10 years in a medical, healthcare, or laboratory environment, ideally with direct experience working with healthcare professionals in surgical settings.

Join our Medical Education team as a Laboratory Specialist and play a vital role in delivering exceptional surgical training experiences. Based in Andover, MA, you will support healthcare professionals and Smith+Nephew colleagues by providing hands on laboratory expertise, technical guidance, and operational support within a world class training environment. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys combining scientific knowledge, customer interaction, compliance, and operational excellence to help advance surgical education. What will you be doing? Provide primary laboratory support and expert practical guidance to visiting healthcare professionals during surgical training courses and educational events. Demonstrate the use of surgical instruments, implants, and equipment to maximize learning opportunities and support effective training delivery. Troubleshoot Smith+Nephew and laboratory equipment, escalating issues when required. Collaborate with Sales, Medical Education, Marketing, Research and Development, and Sales Training teams to facilitate successful training programs and customer visits. Handle human tissue specimens in accordance with local SOPs and regulatory requirements. Support the training and development of internal employees, including sales, marketing, research and development, and leadership team members. Manage laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, specimen care, inventory control, PPE and consumables management, and housekeeping activities. Support compliance activities through SOP and risk assessment review, documentation management, and adherence to governing body requirements. Maintain accurate health, safety, and environmental records while supporting continuous improvement initiatives. What will you need to be successful? Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or related field, or equivalent relevant experience. Minimum of 10 years of experience working in a medical, healthcare, or laboratory environment. Experience working directly with healthcare professionals, ideally within a surgical setting. Knowledge of surgical procedures, surgical products, and relevant medical devices. Customer facing experience with strong communication and presentation skills. Understanding of health and safety practices related to biological materials and laboratory environments. Experience with inventory management and document management systems, with SAP experience preferred. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team. Flexibility to support varying work schedules and occasional domestic and international travel. The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $81,750 - $122,000 USD annually (or hourly) The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
