Who we are

We founded Timely to build the tool we wish we'd had when we were in schools -- hoping to save hundreds of hours of wasted time while helping schools develop better schedules that enable their academic, budget and staffing priorities. Our solution addresses the needs of school-based employees who toil away building schedules and central office employees who need visibility into them.

The school schedule reflects values and priorities. With 75 to 90% of a district budget dedicated to personnel, there are few questions more paramount than how your staff and students spend their time every day, what positions you need, how many teachers you will hire, and how students will interact with them. Strategic resource allocation across schools, proper access to core courses and electives, and dedicated support to sub-groups begins with the development of a school schedule.

Timely is your home for secondary scheduling featuring AI optimization and support from a team of former educators who know and have lived scheduling. Not only does Timely save time and headache, it unlocks resources so district and charter leaders can build a schedule that aligns with their vision.

About the role

This role is a Senior Software Engineer position with a strong focus on frontend development (70% frontend, 30% backend). You will lead the design and development of user-facing features for Timely’s core web application, leveraging React for the frontend and Python for the backend. This is a high-impact position where you will work closely with product, engineering, and School Success teams to build features that directly impact educators and school administrators. Representative examples of projects include creating flexible data visualization capabilities for school decision-makers, refining the performance and usability of drag-and-drop interfaces for scheduling, and enabling prerequisite or alternate courses within the product. Throughout your work, you will have the opportunity to own the technical design, contribute to execution, guide & mentor junior engineers and support the delivery and rollout of projects to customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the development of key Timely app enhancements and features across the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), ensuring high-quality code and design.
  • Lead & contribute to the design and development of user-facing features with a strong focus on frontend (React) while maintaining full-stack capabilities (Python).
  • Collaborate with internal teams (product, engineering, school success) and external stakeholders (especially customers) to identify needs, evaluate solutions, define well-scoped stories, and prioritize impactful work.
  • Contribute to improving development processes, technical best practices, and cross-team communication.
  • Provide technical leadership in the frontend and other areas of the stack if possible to enhance how well the product and technology perform on these dimensions: usability, reliability, maintainability, performance, scalability and security.
  • Troubleshoot customer issues and provide timely resolutions to ensure a seamless scheduling experience. Some limited on-call responsibilities may apply.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, promoting a culture of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in full-stack development, preferably with some overlap with the Timely engineering stack (React, Python, AWS, MongoDB).
  • Advanced knowledge of multiple React ecosystem technologies such as React hooks, state management solutions (Redux, Context API), and modern React patterns. Knowledge within a similar framework (eg. Vue) is ok as long as the candidate can ramp up on React.
  • Proficiency with frontend build tools and testing frameworks (Webpack, Babel, Jest, React Testing Library), design systems, and performance measurement and optimization tooling.
  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining scalable web applications, implementing unit and integration tests, and working with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in cross-functional environments.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement: seeking out and welcoming code reviews, pairing, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Experience and comfort operating in a fast startup environment and all that entails: strong sense of ownership, self-direction, bias towards action, and optimizing for quick delivery of value and learnings for the business.
  • Prior experience in EdTech is a plus but not required.
  • Fully remote role with a preference for candidates based in NY or Boston.
