Summary

Medical Billing Associate supporting Hazel Health's Revenue Operations team in managing accounts receivable, claims processing, and payer communications across multiple states' Medicaid and commercial insurance plans. This contract role focuses on increasing equitable access to healthcare for K-12 students by ensuring efficient revenue cycle operations.

Key Responsibilities: Monitor AR aging by region, reconcile accounts, follow up on rejected/outstanding claims, verify insurance benefits and authorizations, interpret EOBs/ERAs, and communicate with payers to resolve payment issues and denials. Additional duties include spreadsheet data analysis, process improvement identification, and HIPAA-compliant documentation.
Skills & Tools: Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, proficiency with Google Suite tools (Sheets, Docs), experience navigating state Medicaid and commercial insurance portals, and effective communication with payers and internal team members. Knowledge of eligibility verification, claims adjudication, and AR management across multiple payer types required.
Qualifications: Minimum 2+ years of medical insurance AR experience and 1+ year in insurance verification across Medicaid, Managed Medicaid, and commercial payers; billing and coding certification preferred, Associate's degree preferred. Must have 3+ years experience with Google Suite applications and multi-state insurance portal navigation.
Location: Remote
Compensation: Not provided by employer. Typical compensation for this role is $42,000 – $55,000/year based on title, seniority, and location.

The Role:

As a Medical Billing Specialist, you will support the Director of Revenue cycle management in various functions of the Hazel Revenue Operations team. You will concentrate on specific regions and payors supporting the revenue cycle team by reconciling accounts, follow-up up on rejected/outstanding claims, and collaborate with third-party partners on data and clarification requests. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with payers and team members are crucial for success in this role at Hazel Health.

Additionally, this role requires experience with eligibility and claims adjudication for multiple states’ Medicaid, Managed Medicaid, and commercial plans.

What You’ll Do:

  • Monitor AR aging by region to identify overdue accounts and coordinate follow-ups.
  • Use spreadsheets to track and analyze regional data.
  • Reconcile AR regularly to resolve discrepancies and denials.
  • Address payer inquiries and resolve payment issues through the appeals process.
  • Identify and implement improvements in billing and AR processes.
  • Ensure billing/AR practices align with accounting principles and regulations.
  • Make follow-up calls to payors as needed.
  • Verify insurance benefits, medical necessity, and authorization guidelines, following established processes.
  • Interpret EOBs/ERAs and resolve related issues.
  • Document all information correctly in patient accounts.
  • Communicate with insurance providers to validate benefits and check authorization status.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Excites Us:

  • Billing and Coding certification preferred
  • 1+ years experience in insurance verification with experience in Medicaid, Managed Medicaid, and commercial payers across multiple states. 3+ years or more experience with Google Suites (google sheets, google docs)
  • Experience navigating state Medicaid, Managed Medicaid, and commercial insurance portals
  • Highly detail-oriented and comfortable with insurance, claims, and other data sources
  • Associates Degree preferred

Total compensation for this role is market competitive, with a base rate of $26.00/hour.
