Role Snapshot

The Deputy Chief of Staff partners with the Chief of Staff to support the CEO and drive organization-wide projects while enhancing operations at Common Sense Media. This pivotal role combines strategic project leadership, executive support, and high-level advisory responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities: Manage priority projects for the CEO, support day-to-day office operations and CEO scheduling, prepare executive communications, and synthesize information and proposals for decision-making. Lead cross-departmental initiatives, represent the CEO internally, and provide support for events and speaking engagements.
Skills & Tools: Strong project management, strategic planning, executive communication, attention to detail, and self-motivation are essential. Ability to work effectively with C-suite executives, synthesize complex information, and demonstrate solution-oriented thinking.
Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include experience at a national nonprofit or public organization and a graduate degree. Demonstrated experience supporting senior executives and managing high-visibility initiatives is valued.

Compensation: $111K–$132K/yr

Job Description

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Strategic Project Leadership

  • Help drive priority projects for the CEO and manage projects of top importance to the CEO, particularly at the intersection of government advocacy, media, and technology.
  • Support highly visible initiatives from the Office of the CEO.
  • Lead major organizational initiatives with cross-departmental coordination.

Executive Support & Communications

  • Support the management of day-to-day operations for the CEO, including collaborating with the CoS and Executive Assistant to manage the CEO's schedule and calendar.
  • Prepare for and follow through on meetings with key external partners.
  • Draft and send executive communications (both internally and externally) on behalf of the CoS and CEO, including business strategy proposals for external partners.
  • Serve as a representative for the CEO internally for cross-departmental activities.

Advisory & Analysis

  • Provide high-level advice and recommendations to the CoS on a wide variety of programs, issues, and initiatives that require attention or decision.
  • Review and analyze proposals, inquiries, recommendations, and other communications forwarded to the CoS.
  • When delegated, respond on behalf of the CoS and the Office of the CEO.
  • Synthesize and summarize proposals, inquiries, recommendations, and other potential opportunities presented to the CEO for review.

Event Programming & Partnership Support

  • Provide programming and executive communications support in planning Common Sense Media-sponsored events.
  • Support speaking appearances for the CEO and campaign partnerships.
  • Assist with research, development, and organization of Common Sense Media programs and projects as assigned by the CoS.

Documentation & Research

  • Prepare a variety of briefings, reports, information papers, decision papers, and other materials in support of the entire Office of the CEO.
  • Seek out information from a variety of internal and external sources, identify potential issues, collect applicable reference materials, and make appropriate contacts to secure information needed for action and/or decision by the CoS.

Stakeholder Relations

  • When delegated, partner with leadership and key staff across other organizational departments.
  • Serve as a point of contact and/or gatekeeper when needed between top management and other stakeholders.
  • Be a trusted partner to the CoS, demonstrating high levels of discretion when handling confidential information and good instincts to find solutions to problems as they arise.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Required Experience

  • Minimum 5–7 years of professional experience leading major new organizational initiatives, with proven management experience.
  • Bachelor's degree (BA) or equivalent.
  • Prior work experience at a national nonprofit, political organization, or other public-oriented business.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience interfacing with and supporting C-suite executives.
  • Prior experience in communications-related initiatives.
  • Graduate degree (e.g., education or business).
