Summary

Associate Content Developer at Benchmark Education Company creates high-quality literary student books for the school market by collaborating with editors, authors, illustrators, and internal teams through all stages of product development.

Key Responsibilities: Review and edit student books from concept through layout, participate in book ideation, manage manuscript trafficking through development rounds, maintain product metadata and photo logs, conduct research, and support QA for print and digital products. Assist marketing/sales teams and evaluate competitive products as needed.
Skills & Tools: Superior writing, editing, and project management skills with intermediate-advanced MS Office proficiency and basic Adobe Creative Suite knowledge; excellent communication, organizational abilities, and capacity to manage multiple concurrent projects collaboratively across departments.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in English, education, or related field required (Master's degree preferred); knowledge of book development, language/literacy instruction, and teaching experience are advantageous but willingness to learn is essential.

Compensation: Not provided by employer. Typical compensation for this role is $45,000 – $58,000/year based on title, seniority, and location.

Job Description

Position Purpose:

Work collaboratively with a small team of editors to create high quality, literary student books for the school market. Responsible for editorial duties as well as providing editorial support in a variety of capacities. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Assist with and support product development, particularly student book development, as requested including but not limited to: 

-Review all stages of student’s books from concepts to layouts

-Participate in concepting book ideas

-Edit and refine outlines, manuscripts, and layouts in developmental rounds

-Collaborate and communicate with authors, illustrators, and agents, as well as the in-house editorial team

-Conduct research as requested

-Create and maintain photo logs

-Track and traffic manuscripts through a variety of rounds

-Create, update, and maintain product metadata

-Help with assignment of ISBNs

-Help run reports from the Product Manager database

-Help with QAing of print and digital product, as requested

  • Assist Marketing/Sales by providing information or PDFs/other as requested 
  • Review and evaluate competitive products from companies 

Job Requirements/Skills and Experience 

  • College degree, B.A. in English, education, or a related field a plus (M.A. a real plus)  
  • Superior writing, editing, and project management skills 
  • Some knowledge of book development is a plus, but an interest and a willingness to learn is essential
  • Current knowledge of language, literacy, and instructional content issues a plus
  • Intermediate-Advanced proficiency, MS Office 
  • Basic proficiency, Adobe Creative Suite is preferred 
  • Comfortable juggling several projects concurrently 
  • Able to work collaboratively with all departments (e.g., editorial, design, and marketing) 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills  
  • Teaching experience is a plus
