Summary

Key Responsibilities: Lead and mentor an engineering team (full-stack, backend, ML/data), drive technical strategy and roadmap, ensure timely delivery of scalable features, conduct code reviews, and recruit diverse engineering talent. Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, and Data Science to translate user needs into technical requirements.
Skills & Tools: Strong software engineering background with 5+ years of people management experience, exceptional communication skills to translate technical trade-offs for stakeholders, and familiarity with AI/ML systems deployment. Proven ability to hire, coach, and retain engineering talent while balancing innovation with security and regulatory standards.
Qualifications: 5+ years of people management and leadership experience with a strong software engineering background (full-stack or backend). Proven experience scaling dependable production systems and a passion for mission-driven work in education and responsible AI solutions.

Role Overview

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineers (full-stack, backend, ML/data engineering) to build and scale MagicSchool’s next-gen AI tools. You’ll drive technical strategy, ensure high-quality execution, mentor engineers, and collaborate cross-functionally to maintain alignment with our educator-first values.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team—mentor engineers, promote learning and collaboration
  • Define technical strategy and roadmap collaborations with Product, Design, and Data Science
  • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality, reliable, scalable features and infrastructure
  • Drive technical excellence through code reviews, architecture guidance, and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with product and cross-functional teams to translate user needs into technical requirements
  • Manage team processes, sprint planning, capacity planning, and delivery metrics
  • Balance speed of innovation with security, privacy, and regulatory standards critical to schools
  • Recruit top-tier engineering talent and cultivate a diverse, inclusive team culture

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of people management and leadership experience
  • Strong software engineering background (full-stack or backend) and experience scaling dependable and observable production systems
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to translate technical trade‑offs for stakeholders
  • A passion for mission-driven work in education and building responsible AI solutions
  • Proven experience hiring, coaching, and retaining engineering talent
  • Familiarity with AI/ML systems, tools, and deployment (e.g., model serving, pipelines) is a plus
