Summary

Lead accounting operations and financial reporting for MagicSchool, a fast-growing edtech company, while supervising a Staff Accountant in this newly-created Director role reporting to the VP Finance.

Key Responsibilities: Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, manage month-end close and financial reporting, supervise a Staff Accountant, ensure tax compliance, and support audits and internal financial analyses.
Skills & Tools: Strong understanding of financial reporting and general ledger structure, proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel, ability to analyze financial data and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, and knowledge of US GAAP reporting requirements.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting with CPA required; minimum 4-7 years of accounting experience with 2-3 years of supervisory experience preferred and public accounting experience a plus.

This is a hybrid role that requires some in-person work in our Denver, CO office.

Director, Accounting

In this newly-created role, you will report directly to the VP Finance, and serve as one of the lead point people on all accounting-related issues. This is very much a “hands on” accounting role, but you will also oversee a Staff Accountant responsible for general ledger accounting, A/P, and A/R. 

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the accounting function. Be the primary owner of accounting & financial reporting
  • Supervise and coordinate the general ledger, month-end close and internal reporting process, including ownership of ongoing reconciliations, roll-forwards, schedules, etc.
  • Research technical accounting matters and prepare accounting memos to support accounting positions (for example, Revenue recognition)
  • Be a joint owner of general ledger system (currently Quickbooks). Assist in any future systems enhancement, implementations, or software migration
  • Monitor and analyze monthly / quarterly operating results. Prepare outputs for internal teams
  • Oversee and manage the Staff Accountant’s work.
  • Assist VP Finance with preparation of annual audits 
  • Oversee tax compliance (state & local, sales tax, VAT, etc.) and tax system management (currently Avalara)
  • Respond to inquiries from other company-wide managers regarding the financial results and special reporting requests 
  • Develop and maintain internal controls procedures across all accounting systems
  • Support any other ad-hoc internal financial analyses 
  • Play an active role in other aspects of finance & accounting: banking / treasury, risk / insurance, financing, tax, financial planning, investor relations, etc. 
  • Assist in development and implementation of new accounting processes or procedures 
  • Be able to supervise a growing team in the future and ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner

Competencies

  • A thorough understanding of financial reporting and a general ledger structure
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections
  • Ability to multi-task and manage several projects in a fast-paced start-up environment
  • Knowledge of US GAAP reporting requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, CPA required
  • A minimum of 4-7 years accounting experience; 2-3 years supervisory experience is preferred
  • Public accounting experience a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and experience with general ledger and other accounting systems
  • Highly Preferred: Based in the Denver metro area
