WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Software Engineering Manager at Ascend Learning will lead the charge in embracing and guiding a DevOps-driven culture. This role is responsible for facilitating seamless communication within the development team and with senior management, as well as proactively removing any obstacles to the team's efficiency. The manager will also focus on providing leadership, mentorship, and promoting the professional advancement of their team members. Working alongside other organizational leaders, the manager will play a crucial role in organizing and determining the priorities for the product backlog. They will manage the software development lifecycle, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives, in collaboration with Technical Product Managers/Owners. The manager will also directly supervise a cadre of software engineers, including those working remotely from offshore locations, ensuring that their efforts are synchronized with the company's strategic objectives.

This position will work a hybrid schedule from our Leawood, KS, Minneapolis, MN, or Burlington, MA office locations.

HOW YOU’LL SPEND YOUR TIME

  • Help to meet business needs outside of agile sprints or assign them to capable resources on your team
  • Model the culture we want to have: a DevOps mindset, caring interactions, and accountability
  • Ensure employees are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible with their teams
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to define project requirements and scope.
  • Work with the development teams to ensure they are able to deliver committed work items
  • Ensure their team maintains the technical quality and architectural integrity of the software products
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet customer expectations
  • Manage risks and resolve issues that affect release scope, schedule, and quality
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and drive the implementation of solutions
  • Handle day-to-day management responsibilities for direct reports
  • Assist/lead teams’ program increment and iteration planning, retrospectives, and demos
  • Work with Release Train Engineers and Technical Product Owners to lead release deployments across cross functional teams
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with business and technical staff in on-site and virtual environments

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience required
  • Certified Scrum Master / Iteration Lead or equivalent work experience
  • 8 years of software development or technical experience
  • 3 years of people management experience
  • Experience with process management and process change implementation
  • Solid knowledge of multiple languages and development methodologies, including c#, Angular or AngularJS, .NET Core, JQuery, MVC, WCF, SQL, HTML5, and CSS 3.0
  • Solid grasp of infrastructural and operational principles
  • Strong team player
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, executives, managers, and subject matter experts
