Summary

Lead a full-stack engineering team at Brightwheel to build a best-in-class learning platform for early education, delivering engaging solutions for teachers and parents. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with strategic team development in a fast-growing edtech company.

Key Responsibilities: Lead team delivery of projects while maintaining software quality and balancing rapid shipping with operational excellence. Partner with Product, Design, and stakeholders on roadmap execution, mentor and hire engineers, drive architecture decisions, and implement process improvements.
Skills & Tools: 2+ years managing full-stack engineering teams with strong technical depth in software development, excellent communication skills, and pragmatic approach to processes. Experience with modern web stacks (React, Rails, Postgres, Kubernetes) and ability to contribute to engineering-wide technical initiatives.
Qualifications: Proven experience delivering customer-facing features, hiring engineers, and collaborating with third-party vendors. Strong understanding of technical architecture and design discussions preferred.

Who You Are

Brightwheel is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to join our full-stack Education team, which is building a best-in-class learning platform used by admins, teachers, and parents to support the growth and development of their students and children. You will launch brand new features and products to enable administrators and teachers to plan and deliver engaging and enriching activities, document development, and share progress with guardians and other stakeholders. In addition, your team will be responsible for building great software across our stack, starting by collaborating with product and design on what to build and why, all the way through to shipping and operating the software you craft, all in a period of massive growth! 

Our stack is comprised of React, Rails, Postgres on RDS, Redis, Sidekiq, and others running on a finely-tuned Kubernetes cluster in AWS powering a web experience and native iOS and Android apps. We believe in using pragmatic, battle-hardened technologies that are right for the job.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a full-stack team of passionate, dedicated engineers to rapidly deliver projects while balancing quality
  • Partner with Product, Design, and business stakeholders to deliver against pod goals and roadmaps
  • Maintain accountability for the architecture, development, testing, and reliability of for featuresets within the pod’s ownership
  • Develop and grow the team by mentoring and coaching engineers, as well as through performance management and hiring
  • Drive process improvements to increase product velocity while simultaneously raising the bar for quality and operational excellence
  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Brightwheel’s engineering management team

Qualifications, Skills, & Abilities

  • You bring 2+ years of experience managing a full-stack product engineering team of 4+ engineers, and have a track record of shipping critical customer-facing features 
  • You have experience delivering zero-to-one products as well as enhancing existing products and technologies
  • You have experience hiring engineers at various levels including Sr Engineers and above
  • You have a pragmatic approach to developing and evolving right-sized processes that help teams operate effectively
  • You have experience working with 3rd party vendors to deliver customer-facing solutions
  • You have strong technical depth and can participate in, as well as influence, technical architecture and design discussions, especially as it pertains to scalability and reliability
  • You work very well cross-functionally and are able to make hard decisions and trade-offs while incorporating a diversity of perspectives
  • You’re an empathetic listener with strong verbal and written communication skills, and have the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences and different levels within the company
  • You encourage a healthy work environment that is both supportive and challenging

$142,000 - $237,000 a year

Brightwheel is committed to internal pay equity and offers a competitive compensation package, including base salary, equity, and benefits. For cash compensation, brightwheel sets standard ranges for all roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar-stage growth companies.
