Lead the Department of Psychology at Old Dominion University as chair on a tenured track, providing strategic leadership to advance research, teaching, and service excellence across the department. Serve as a collaborative advocate for faculty and students while maintaining an active scholarship program.

Key Responsibilities: Manage departmental operations including budget, facilities, teaching schedules, and personnel; support faculty recruitment, mentoring, and promotion; and oversee undergraduate and graduate student affairs and degree program development. Represent the department internally and externally while fostering a culture of scholarly collaboration and faculty governance.
Skills & Tools: Demonstrated leadership, strategic planning, and budget management abilities; strong interpersonal and communication skills for faculty mentoring and institutional advocacy; and research expertise aligned with one of the department's Ph.D. concentrations.
Qualifications: Doctorate in Psychology or related discipline with a strong record of research, teaching, and service; prior experience in academic leadership, faculty management, or administrative roles preferred. Active scholarship commensurate with rank required.

Compensation: $120K–$180K/yr (estimated)

Job Description

The Department of Psychology in the College of Sciences at Old Dominion University (ODU) seeks a collaborative, collegial, and dynamic leader to serve as the department chair. The area of research is open, with a preference for candidates whose research program aligns with one of our Ph.D. concentrations. The faculty member will:
  • Work with the faculty and administration to support the department’s continuing growth and excellence in research, teaching, and service.
  • Manage departmental operations including faculty, staff, budget, facilities, and teaching schedules.
  • Maintain and enhance the culture of scholarly collaboration and faculty governance in the department.
  • Support faculty recruitment, hiring, mentoring, career success, and promotion.
  • Manage faculty evaluations and applications for promotion.
  • Provide leadership to support faculty enhancement of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
  • Manage undergraduate and graduate student affairs issues as they arise.
  • Represent and advocate for the department internally and externally.
  • Maintain an active program of scholarship commensurate with rank and administrative commitments.
