Role Snapshot

A Special Education Learning Specialist serving middle school students at KIPP NYC, diagnosing student challenges and designing individualized intervention programs for students with IEPs, disabilities, and at-risk learners. The role combines rigorous college-preparatory instruction with data-driven, differentiated strategies to ensure student success.

Key Responsibilities: Teach college preparatory curriculum aligned with school and New York State standards, deliver individual and small group targeted interventions, constantly assess student progress and communicate results to families and colleagues, and model a 'whatever it takes' commitment to student achievement.
Skills & Tools: Strong diagnostic and instructional design abilities, proficiency with data analysis and progress monitoring, excellent collaboration and communication with general education teachers and families, and demonstrated commitment to differentiated instruction and professional growth.
Qualifications: Special Education teaching certification or eligibility in New York State and experience working with students with IEPs and disabilities in a school setting. Knowledge of college preparatory curriculum standards and differentiated intervention strategies is expected.
Location: In-Person - New York, NY
Compensation: $45K–$62K/yr (estimated)

Job Description

Position Overview:

KIPP NYC Special Education Teachers work closely both as a team and with General Education Teachers to plan targeted, high-leverage interventions for their students. Our Special Education Teachers seek first to diagnose student challenges and then to design individual programs and differentiated strategies to meet specific needs. The team serves students with IEPs and diagnosed disabilities, as well as with students who are identified as at-risk.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

General responsibilities include (but are not limited to): 

  • Teaching a rigorous college preparatory curriculum which combines the school’s standards and the New York State standards
  • Teaching students in a high-quality, exciting way
  • Committing to constant professional and personal growth through working closely as part of a team of teachers
  • Using data to drive decisions
  • Constantly assessing student progress, and communicating results to families and colleagues
  • Providing individual or small group instruction for students who need additional assistance
  • Modeling a “whatever it takes” spirit to ensure that each student is successful.
  • Modeling the school’s values in all communications with students, families, and staff
