Summary

Director of IT & Security at MagicSchool AI will build and lead IT and information security functions from the ground up to support a platform used by over 5 million teachers worldwide. This hands-on role reports directly to the COO and is critical to shaping the company's operational backbone.

Key Responsibilities: Establish IT management processes, develop and implement comprehensive security programs aligned with industry standards, lead complex IT and security projects, and collaborate cross-functionally to integrate security across all operations. Manage helpdesk operations, enforce technology policies, oversee vendor management, and communicate security risks to the organization.
Skills & Tools: Expertise in compliance frameworks (SOC 2, NIST, ISO 27001) and EdTech regulations (FERPA, COPPA), strong project management abilities, and excellent communication skills to simplify complex security topics across all organizational levels. Proven ability to manage multiple high-impact projects with high ownership and attention to detail.
Qualifications: At least 5 years of relevant experience in information technology and security with proven execution of complex projects in startup environments. Strong knowledge of security frameworks and EdTech regulations required.

Role Description:

As Director of Information Technology (IT) & Security, you will build and lead our IT and information security functions from the ground up, ensuring the systems and practices that power our work are reliable, secure, and scalable. In this hands-on, individual contributor role, you’ll manage everything from infrastructure to incident response while advising on strategic technology decisions. You’ll report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and play a critical role in shaping our operational backbone.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for driving to the following outcomes:

  • IT Management: Establish and manage a helpdesk, develop and enforce technology policies and procedures, oversee vendor management, and train our team on the effective use of technology.
  • Security Program Management: Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive security program aligned with industry standards (SOC 2, NIST, ISO 27001) and EdTech regulations (FERPA, COPPA).
  • Project Execution: Lead and execute complex IT and security projects, ensuring effective management and timely delivery in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with engineering, product, legal, and other teams to integrate security across all operations and communicate risks and strategies clearly to the organization.

Experience & Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring the following experience and qualifications:

  • Professional Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in information technology and security, with proven experience executing complex projects in a startup environment.
  • Compliance Expertise: Strong knowledge of security frameworks (SOC 2, NIST, ISO 27001) and EdTech regulations (FERPA, COPPA).
  • Execution Skills: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple high-impact projects with a high level of ownership and attention to detail.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent ability to simplify complex security topics and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
