Summary

Software Engineer 1 at StrongMind builds engaging product experiences that democratize education by enabling educators and students through modern development technologies and agile practices. This role focuses on creating simple, effortless solutions within a collaborative cross-functional team environment.

Key Responsibilities: Participate in all aspects of the software lifecycle from ideation through development and production support, collaborating with Engineers, UX, Product, and Operations teams. Apply continuous integration, test-driven development, and agile methodologies to deliver engaging and adaptive application interfaces.
Skills & Tools: Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Ruby/Rails, JS/TS, Python/Django preferred) with awareness of cross-platform development best practices, mobile development knowledge a plus, and familiarity with agile methods. Strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, self-driven learning mindset, and passion for education technology are essential.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Education, or related field, or equivalent experience with 1+ years of professional development experience in a production environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

Compensation: Not provided by employer. Typical compensation for this role is $75,000 – $95,000/year based on Software Engineer 1 level, location (Arizona), and required experience.

Job Description

 Position Summary: As a Software Engineer at StrongMind, you will join a cross functional team using the latest development technologies and agile practices, to deliver solutions that democratize education, enabling educators to amplify their impact and students to control their learning experience.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Build magical product experiences. Make the technical & complex simple and effortless.
  • Participate in all aspects of the software life-cycle, from ideation through development and including production support.
  • Collaborate deeply with a cross functional team of Engineers, UX, Product and Operations to create engaging and adaptive application interfaces
  • Leverage practices such as Continuous Integration, Pairing, and Test-Driven Development to deliver early and often.
  • Apply Lean Startup/Agile approaches to software development
  • Work in an open space environment (no cube walls)
  • Commit to implementing standard department practices and actively learning

Specific Job Skills/Abilities:

  • 1+ years of Engineering experience with at least one modern language in a production environment, multiple languages strongly preferred (e.g. Ruby/Rails, JS/TS, Python/Django)
  • Awareness of cross platform development best practices (e.g. mobile first, responsive design, progressive web applications)
  • Knowledge of mobile development a plus.
  • Familiarity with agile methods.
  • Passion for self-driven, continuous learning, both in and out of the office
  • Opinionated on technology, in theory, but flexible in practice
  • Involvement with Open Source projects a plus.
  • Passion for Education is a must; experience in Ed-Tech helpful, but not required

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Education, a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • 1+ years Development experience
