Role Snapshot

A Special Education Learning Specialist who works collaboratively with general education teachers to design and implement targeted interventions for middle school students with IEPs and disabilities. The role focuses on diagnosing student challenges and creating differentiated instructional strategies to support college preparatory success.

Key Responsibilities: Teach rigorous college preparatory curriculum aligned with school and New York State standards, provide individual and small group instruction, assess student progress continuously, and communicate results to families and colleagues. Design and implement high-leverage interventions, model the school's values, and demonstrate a commitment to ensuring every student's success.
Skills & Tools: Strong data analysis and instructional design skills, ability to differentiate instruction and diagnose learning challenges, excellent communication and collaboration abilities, and commitment to ongoing professional growth. Must demonstrate cultural competence, adaptability, and a solutions-oriented mindset.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required; must hold or be eligible for New York State Special Education certification or teaching license. Preferred experience working with students with IEPs and diverse learning needs in a school setting.

Compensation: $42K–$58K/yr (estimated)

Job Description

Position Overview:

KIPP NYC Special Education Teachers work closely both as a team and with General Education Teachers to plan targeted, high-leverage interventions for their students. Our Special Education Teachers seek first to diagnose student challenges and then to design individual programs and differentiated strategies to meet specific needs. The team serves students with IEPs and diagnosed disabilities, as well as with students who are identified as at-risk.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

General responsibilities include (but are not limited to): 

  • Teaching a rigorous college preparatory curriculum which combines the school’s standards and the New York State standards
  • Teaching students in a high-quality, exciting way
  • Committing to constant professional and personal growth through working closely as part of a team of teachers
  • Using data to drive decisions
  • Constantly assessing student progress, and communicating results to families and colleagues
  • Providing individual or small group instruction for students who need additional assistance
  • Modeling a “whatever it takes” spirit to ensure that each student is successful.
  • Modeling the school’s values in all communications with students, families, and staff
