About the Role

The Deputy Editor will be part of Cell’s editorial leadership team, working closely together with the leadership team to ensure that Cell delivers on its mission and meets its aims. The role requires regular travel to conferences and institutes, and it involves people management. The role can be based out of one of our offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts; London; Amsterdam; Beijing; and Shanghai. Responsibilities

  • Managing and mentoring members of the Cell editorial team and deputizing for the Editor-in-Chief when needed.
  • Shaping and implementing journal strategy.
  • Leading strategic projects at Cell and Cell Press, and supporting efforts across the organization
  • Evaluating and making decisions on research papers submitted to Cell.
  • Working with authors and reviewers to publish exciting science across a range of topic areas.
  • Engaging with the scientific community in their labs and at conferences. Learning about scientific developments, recruiting papers, and establishing relationships.
  • Advocating for science, providing thought leadership, and influencing the practice and direction of science and scientific communication.

Qualifications

  • Have a Ph.D. or M.D. with research experience in an area relevant to the journal.
  • Have 7+ years of prior editorial/publishing experience. 
  • Display broad interests, love of science, and desire to learn. 
  • Have a talent for clear communication. The ability to help authors make their message clear, concise, and compelling. 
  • Display exceptional interpersonal skills, and a team-focused, service-oriented mindset.
  • Have an understanding of publishing trends.
  • Able to organize, prioritize, and focus, and the ability and talent to help team members to do the same.
