Qualifications: Minimum 7 years technical experience with programming background and at least 2 years in a leadership or team lead role. Demonstrated team management, mentorship, and people development skills.

The Opportunity

As the Data Engineering Team Lead, you will be responsible for leading and managing the data engineering team, defining the technical strategy, and ensuring the successful design and implementation of tools and infrastructure that allow internal and external stakeholders to access data-based insights to drive decision-making in our business and to meet the needs of our customers.


What You’ll Do

  • Lead projects in the design, development and maintenance of core data infrastructure, including data warehouses, data lakes, pipelines and integrations.
  • Define the long-term technical roadmap and architecture for the company’s data platform.
  • Lead projects in the design, development and implementation of data models to be robust foundations enabling educational and business insights.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and optimise the performance of data infrastructure and tools, including databases, automated analytics jobs, pipelines and integrations.
  • Develop and improve functionality in the company’s products that collects data in the product application, including usage tracking.
  • Manage, mentor, and provide technical leadership and coaching to the data engineering team, assisting them in their professional growth and development.
  • Work closely with software engineers to understand and communicate requirements for usage data collection in the company’s products
  • Work closely with data analysts to understand and negotiate requirements for data infrastructure and tools, and provide high-quality data.
  • Drive the implementation and advancement of best practices and coding standards for data engineering processes and workflows.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and frameworks to enhance the data engineering infrastructure and capabilities.
  • Take ownership of the data tech stack, ensuring optimal performance and integration of key tools including Hex, ClickHouse Cloud, ClickPipes, BigQuery, dbt, CockroachDB, and Kafka.


What You’ll Bring

  • At least seven years’ experience in a technical discipline including programming experience, with at least two years in a leadership or team lead role.
  • Proven team leadership, mentorship, and people management skills to guide and support data engineering team members.
  • Exemplary software practice, including writing clear code, problem decomposition, and source control using Git
  • Exceptional communication, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • A strong ability to distil project requirements from stakeholder requests, breaking them down into smaller components to facilitate defining clear specifications and deliverables
  • Extensive expertise in databases, data pipelines, and other data tools and infrastructure, specifically within our data tech stack: Hex, ClickHouse Cloud, ClickPipes, BigQuery, dbt, CockroachDB, Kafka, and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL
  • Ability to learn and work with APIs of third-party software systems
  • Constant attention to detail for data security, integrity and quality
  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging and troubleshooting skills related to data engineering challenges
  • Strategic thinking and ability to contribute to the long-term data vision of the business
