Summary

Manager of IT at Nelnet Business Services leading a software development team within the Grant & Aid product division. This role combines people management, technical leadership, and strategic alignment to drive team performance and organizational culture.

Key Responsibilities: Coach and develop direct reports, set clear team objectives aligned with organizational goals, build cross-functional relationships with IT/Product/Operations leaders, and lead hiring and performance management processes. Translate technical concepts into business language, implement lean solutions for efficiency, and foster a learning-oriented culture.
Skills & Tools: Strong people management and mentoring capabilities with ability to translate technical detail into business context. Solid understanding of automated testing, modern front-end/server-side development, Agile principles, and preferably .Net/Angular/TypeScript/MySQL stack with microservices and CI/CD experience.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience required with 3+ years in IT/Software team management or leadership roles. Demonstrated experience mentoring others, driving team change, and strong communication skills with ability to explain complex issues clearly.
Location: United States (hybrid and remote options available)
Compensation: Not provided by employer. Typical compensation for this role is $95,000 – $130,000/year based on IT Manager title, 3+ years experience requirement, Nelnet's market position, and US location.

The Manger of IT accomplishes departmental and organizational objectives through others, including activities related to performance management and human resources. This position must use company core values to guide decisions and behaviors in order to elevate culture within their team and across the organization. In addition, the Manager of IT should support technology and product strategy within their team(s) and business through collaborative and educational efforts.

The Grant & Aid product, part of the FACTS ecosystem, supports private, faith-based schools and scholarship organizations. Through our software-as-a-service platform, we handle the processes of grant application, verification, awarding, and reporting for scholarship offices.

Job Responsibilities:

5.   Responsible for performance evaluations and recommending compensation changes.

6.   Promotes teamwork and cooperation within and across teams.

7.   Implements lean solutions to improve team efficiency while maintaining effectiveness.

8.   Assesses and improves team health.

9.   Creates a culture that makes room for failure and learning.

10.   Leads the hiring process for team members.

11.   Contributes to department staffing plans and budget processes.

Education

Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience.


Requirements

  •  3+ years in IT/Software Team area.
  • A commitment to continually developing your skills.


  • Experience mentoring others or driving significant change within a team.


  • A skilled listener who prioritizes building shared understanding and offering guidance that encourages accountability.


  • A solid understanding of key concepts, including automated testing, modern front-end and server-side development, and the creation of business and functional requirements.


  • Proactive communicator with the ability to clearly and concisely explain complex issues to your team, clients, colleagues, and management.


Nice-to-haves

  • Technical or managerial experience with a .Net and Angular/typescript and MySQLproject.


  • Understanding of micro-service architectures and CI/CD.


  • Familiarity with Agile principles and experience working in a Scrum environment.


  • Have worked in a remote or hybrid setting.


Pay range for this role is $115,000-$125,000 annually depending on experience.
